This important film tells the story of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The story of the African American education beginning with the period of slavery provides a context. Importantly, the film lifts up the role of students in standing up to adults, both black and white, who failed to confront racism. The of end the film briefly points out that the future of these historical institutions is in question.
It is impossible to watch the film without becoming convinced that HBCUs have the potential of contributing leadership as America faces racism.

The 83 minute movie is distributed by PBS. It is directed by documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson who produces movies through his company, Firelight Media.
