Brief Summary of Chapter 8

Institutional Racism

Institutional racism is the policies and practices that reside in our various forms of social organization. Racism is both formally and informally a part of cultural, social, religious, political and other institutions. Each of these institutions has a role and goal as part of the larger society. The goal of a social institution is not to promote or preserve racism. And racism is not essential for the accomplishment of the institution's goals. Therefore, ending racism in these institutions requires changing practices and policies.
